Semiconductor Innovation in an Investment Constrained Economy

The current innovation climate in the semiconductor industry is alive and well but entrepreneurs have to adjust to the realities of the current economic situation and investment trends. The world's governmental economic development agencies have always looked at Silicon Valley with envy and paid big money to try to find the key which would unlock the secrets

Is EDA still an appropriate term for what we do? What applications will drive future semiconductor design innovation? Will further consolidation be required for EDA to thrive again? They are all good questions, questions that will hopefully be properly addressed at the EDAC CEO Forecast and Industry Vision event next week but here are my thoughts:
The marketplace for semiconductor IP (SIP) continues to grow at double digit rates. According to Gartner Dataquest, the SIP market will reach $2.3B in 2014. IBS and Semico believe that the market will be over $3B in 2014. What is driving this growth? What are the major trends that we see in IP?
